The U.S. Bureau of Reclamation was created by Congress in 1902 to build irrigation projects in the West. The Salt River Project, as one of the first reclamation projects, in a sense owes its life to the Bureau. However, the passage of the Reclamation Act was due in large part to the political influence of private citizens in the West, with prominent roles played by citizens of the Salt River Valley.
