The Wilbanks site, 9CK-5 in the nomenclature of the River Basin Surveys, Smithsonian Institution, is located on the flat bottom lands of the Etowah River in north Georgia. As this river is in the foothills of the Appalachians, it flows in a southwest-northeast direction, following the line of the ridges and valleys, rather than flowing north and south as do most of the rivers in Georgia.
