Huff Village Revisited: A New Radiocarbon Chronology for a Pivotal Time (2019)
DOCUMENT Citation Only Travis Jones.

This is an abstract from the "SAA 2019: General Sessions" session, at the 84th annual meeting of the Society for American Archaeology. The large, heavily-fortified Huff village site in North Dakota is a quintessential Late Prehistoric plains village within the Middle Missouri region of the Northern Plains. Since the 1940s, attempts to establish Huff’s occupational history and absolute placement in time achieved only coarse-grained or inconclusive results, suggesting village occupations...

The Living Village: Time Slices and Residential Shifts, 1800-1960, Inishark, Ireland (2013)
DOCUMENT Citation Only Ian Kuijt. Meagan K Conway. Alissa Nauman. Katherine E Shakour. Claire Brown. John O’Neill.

The cultural geography and development of Irish coastal villages before, during and after the famine remains largely unexplored. The evacuation of Inishark in 1960, and the absence of later building and development, provides a unique opportunity to understand the how village organization changed from 1800-1960. Drawing upon historical maps of Inishark from 1816, 1838, 1849, 1898, LiDAR of the village, and archaeological field research, in this presentation we explore the interweaving of human...

Magnetic Gradient Survey of a Hunter-Gatherer Plank House Village at the Dionisio Point Site, Northwest Coast of North America (2016)
DOCUMENT Citation Only Patrick Dolan. Colin Grier. Markussen Christine. Katie Simon.

We present the results of magnetometry survey of four houses at the Dionisio Point site, a 1,500 year-old settlement in the Gulf Islands of southwestern British Columbia, Canada. Intensive excavations have uncovered much of one of five substantial houses. It is the remains of a shed-roof plank house, the winter residence of a large multi-family corporate group. We suggest that the rest were contemporaneous households organized in a similar fashion and that Dionisio likely constituted an example...

Villages on the Edge of the Edge: Reflections on the Changing Economics of Irish Coastal Communities (2016)
DOCUMENT Citation Only Ian Kuijt.

Island village communities are both physically detached from, and connected with, mainland urban and foreign economic communities.   In the context of 19th to 20th century Irish fishing communities, landlords owned entire islands and ran them as economic enterprises.  On the Connemara islands of Inishark, Inishbofin, and Inishturk, tenants often lived in close physical proximity to each other, in villages of a hundred or more people, paying rent to the landlord in exchange for use of stone...
