The La Roche sites are located near the southern boundary of Stanley County, South Dakota, where the Missouri River, flowing to the east, makes a 90-degree turn to the south (Fig. 1). At this point, the high bluffs on the right bank of the river swing back and reveal a small, fertile floodplain known as the La Roche Bottoms.
