To support the work involved in developing a PA, Nellis AFB determined that the area of research should be expanded for the entire north NTTR, 2 million acres, a region of intense volcanism. In 2000, the Air Force funded a large-scale scientific investigation of obsidian and its human associations on 2 million acres on the NTTR, the largest study done in terms of acreage and numbers of artifacts analyzed.
Natural and Cultural Resources Study for Nellis Bombing and Gunnery Range (1977)
The purpose of this report is to survey and summarize the current information on the natural and cultural resources of Nellis Bombing and Gunnery Range (Nellis BGR), and to outline the work that must still be done to attain a full description of these resources. This description, when completed, wIII be a basis for the environmental analysis for continued withdrawal of the land from the public domain, and for resource use planning for these lands.
