In 1970, Robert Renger, then a graduate student at the University of California at Santa Barbara (UCSB), conducted an intensive archaeological survey in the seaward portions of a land unit (ahupua'a) called Kaloko, located in North Kana on Hawai'i Island (Fig. I).
