This project consists of archaeological excavations conducted by Southern Methodist University, Arizona State University, and University of Colorado at Chaves-Hummingbird Pueblo (LA578), a large Pueblo IV settlement located in the Rio Puerco Valley of central New Mexico. As part of this project, archaeological materials were also analyzed from Pottery Mound Pueblo (LA416).
Pottery Mound (LA 416) Fauna (2000)
The faunal remains analyzed in this study derive from excavations that were undertaken by the University of New Mexico in 1979. The materials were recovered from a 5 X 5 m test unit that had been placed in a midden area along the northern edge of the site. Deposits in this area were characterized by a relatively dense accumulation of stratified trash that had depths up to 3.4 meters.
