The Hitchell Site is one of a group of major village and burial areas excavated by the Smithsonian Institution and cooperating agencies within the Fort Randall Reservoir on the mainstem of the Missouri River in south-central South Dakota. Field investigations of one sort or another were completed at a substantial number of sites but, unfortunately, only a few were extensively excavated.
