Samples were examined from Charles Towne Landing State Historic Site, the first permanent English settlement of the Colony Carolina. It was occupied between 1670 and 1680. Soil recovered from a trench feature in a possible small, seventeenth century vineyard was submitted for analysis. Documents indicate small grape arbors adjacent to houses in the area.
