Fort Verde State Historic Park provides a vivid glimpse into post Civil War garrison life on the frontier. Though only four of the Fort buildings remain, staff have achieved a forceful interpretation of the history of the Fort, and, more importantly, a clear and present sense of the soldiers who served a portion of their lives there. The Park is unusual amongst historic site museums in the degree to which aggressive research and documentation is woven through exhibits. The results of this...

Site Form for 3PU0444 (1995)
Site Form for 3PU0444. Site 3PU0444 appears to be a 1940s to 1950s farmstead, probably associated with either the 1945 Ordnance Plant or the town of Taneyville. It consists of six features as well as an intact set of cement steps and a moderately dense subsurface artifact scatter. Unfortunately, the late occupation of the site and the disturbance noted are considered to make it ineligible for inclusion on the NRHP and no further work is required.

Their Own Road: Archaeological Investigations along State Route 260 Payson to Heber-Kohls Ranch Section (2017)
The Kohls Ranch highway section lies at the center of the State Route (SR) 260 —Payson to Heber project area. This section also crosses a number of central places of the past. Indian Garden, a mile to the east, is a spring-fed meadow. Geology transitions in this area, as the topography created by the friable granites to...
Unanticipated Discovery Report (2007)
On 09 Jul 07, kids playing about 50 yards north of Quarters 73 uncovered a feature of bricks and charcoal. The bricks were built into a square about 18" x 18" and about one foot deep. The interior was filled with charcoal\ash. It appears to be the remains of a chimney. Since we have original plans of the buildings and maps of their locations, nothing new could be learned from excavating the feature. It was reburied.
