Ripley
Part of: Iroquoian Ceramic Data
Ripley (a.k.a. Dewey's Knoll, NYSM 2490) is located in Chautauqua Co. near the town of Ripley. It is believed to date to around A.D. 1600, though it has been suggested that there may be two Iroquoian components. Sample = 562 vessels (New York State Museum = 374, SUNY/Buffalo Anthropology = 188). The collection at SUNY/Buffalo was formerly in the William Wheelock Collection of Dunkirk. A small collection from Frank Swartz of Erie, PA was added to the NY State Museum collection. The collection from SUNY/Buffalo was recorded in 1980 and the collection in the New York State Museum was recorded in 1987.
