Archaeological Field Reconnaissance Salamonie Reservoir Visitor’s Center 1980
Part of: US Army Corps of Engineers, Louisville District VCP
This collection is referred to as "Archeological Field Reconnaissance Salamonie Reservoir Visitor’s Center 1980.” This name is consistent throughout the finding aid, the file folders, and the box labels. The extent of this collection is three quarters (0.75) of a linear inch.
All records were in generally good condition. The collection included only paper and oversized materials; no photographic materials were present. Nowhere in this collection of documents does there appear to be an accession number, site number, contract number or provenience. This is probably due to the fact that no cultural remains were found. Records were separated into Administrative, Background, and Report record series. Three of the administrative documents pertained to the budget, with the fourth concerning the necessity of an archeological reconnaissance.
The background records consisted of an oversized site plan of the proposed visitor’s center and an oversized map of the Mississinewa Reservoir area. Both documents were placed in the background records due to them being excluded from the final report. Also, the site plan was dated before the estimated start date of the field reconnaissance. Of note is the fact that the Mississinewa Reservoir map appeared to have no direct relation to the actual archeological reconnaissance of the Salamonie Reservoir Visitor’s Center site.
The report records included an oversized location map of the Visitor’s Center and four copies of the final report, one printed on acid free paper. The acid free copy was originally placed in a folder by the repository storing them. Metal contaminates were removed from the remaining acidic copies. The location map that appears as Figure 1 in the final report is marked as Figure 2 on the original map. The original draft maps corresponding to Figures 2, 3, and 4 in the final report were not included in the collection of documents concerning this archeological reconnaissance. Both of the oversized maps from the Background and Report record series folders were flattened.
The digital materials in this collection were processed by the Veterans Curation Program (VCP), and include the finding aid, investigation report, oversized material database, and scanned asset key. Additional digital materials held by the VCP include architectural plans, budget transfer request, correspondence, interdepartmental communication, labels, mail receipts, maps, progress report and records removal sheet. For additional information on these materials, refer to the Finding Aid.

Archaeological Field Reconnaissance Salamonie Reservoir Visitor’s Center 1980
PROJECT
An archeological field reconnaissance led by Ronald Hicks from Ball State University was carried out for the proposed Visitor’s Center at Lost Bridge State Recreation area on the Salamonie Reservoir, Indiana. No significant cultural remains were found during the surface and subsurface survey or as a result of shovel probe tests. Thus, it was recommended that the project be allowed to proceed without further archaeological assessment (Wepler 1980). The digital materials in this collection were...
