Archaeological Intensive Assessment of Huntington Municipal Airport (12HU1068) 1993
Part of: US Army Corps of Engineers, Louisville District VCP
Starting in May 1993, at the request of MSE Corporation, a field reconnaissance of the Huntington Municipal Airport and surrounding area was conducted prior to the planned expansion of the airport and the construction of a new boat ramp access road located approximately one mile east of the airport (Zoll 1993). At this time USACE, Louisville District owned some of the land involved in this investigation. Donald R. Cochran from Ball State University was the principal investigator for this investigation, which recorded forty-six sites, 12HU1068 through 12HU1116.
Site 12HU1068 had a substantial artifact concentration, so a more intensive assessment of this site was conducted by Ball State University in August of the same year. Artifacts from both the field reconnaissance of all forty-six sites and the intensive assessment of 12HU1068 can be found in this collection. The investigation name used by the St. Louis VCP is derived from the testing of site 12HU1068. The field reconnaissance and the intensive assessment were combined into one VCP investigation even though AAL had assigned project numbers to these artifacts, because not all the artifacts were associated with these numbers. The VCP determined that it was better to process all this material together as opposed to creating three small, unique projects for the material. According to C. Keller, curator at AAL (personal communication 2012), the first two numbers in an AAL Project Number stand for the year the project was performed, the two letters stand for what type of project it was (FR would be field reconnaissance), and the last number is a unique number assigned to the project.
The digital materials in this collection were processed by the Veterans Curation Program (VCP), and include select artifact photographs, artifact database, artifact report, finding aid, investigation reports, oversized material database, photographic material database, and scanned asset key. Additional digital materials held by the VCP include additional artifact photographs, budget estimates, correspondence, field notes, interdepartmental communication, mail receipts, and statements of account. For additional information on these materials, refer to the Finding Aid.
