Marking and Making Difference Appendix E: Late Proto Database
Part of the Documents and Data from Hegmon et al. Marking and Making Difference: Representational Diversity in the US Southwest project
Year: 2015
Summary
Appendices A,B,C,D,E contain the data used in:
Marking and Masking Differences: Representational Diversity in the U.S. Southwest.
Published in American Antiquity 81(2), 2016, pp. 253-272. By Michelle Hegmon, Jacob Freeman, Keith W. Kintigh, Margaret C. Nelson, Sarah Oas, Matthew A. Peeples, and Andrea Torvinen
The paper is based on data from the Cibola region of the US Southwest, and each (.xlsx) file includes the data for a given time period (Pueblo III, Early Pueblo IV, Late Pueblo IV, Early Prothistoric, Late Protohistoric). The periods are explained in the article.
Each file includes the following sheets:
Apportioned Counts – These are “counts” of each ceramic ware, apportioned to that time period following procedures described briefly in the text and in more detail by Roberts et al (2012). These are ordered by the TOTAL in the last column. The SWSN_ID is the ID# assigned by the Southwest Social Networks project (Mills et al. 2013). The Subregion is that used in our analysis. A brief description of the SWSN project and a list of all wares are available at http://www.archaeologysouthwest.org/swsn.
Proportions by Area – These are the same data, including only sites with sample sizes of 40 or more for the given time period. On this sheet they are organized by subregion and the data have been transformed into proportions (i.e., fraction of row total). The final two columns C and SimDiv (1-C) are the diversity measures explained in the article.
In addition, Appendix A has a third sheet Sample size effect. This shows the proportions for all sites and includes graphs that show how sample size affects the diversity measures.
