Summary

Excavations were made in 1967 at the Bellows Sand Dune Site (018)X-y located at the mouth of Waimanalo Stream, Oahu, Hawaiian (Pearson et al. 1971). Analysis suggested that the dune contained a stratified deposit representing one of the earliest occupations in the Hawaiian. In spring and summer of 1975 we conducted further archaeological work at 018 and adjacent sites. The aim present paper is to review some of the problems in the past analysis, to the recent research data and interpretations, and to make suggestions for work.

Problems reviewed here focus on two issues: 1) delineation of site boundaries - the problem of sampling, and 2) stratigraphic control and the dating of artifactual material within strata - the problem of the analysis of spatial patterns. Our orientation in this critique is toward the reconstruction of actions, both human and non-human, which have resulted in the present nature of the site, what Tuggle (1974) has referred to as event-analysis.
