Summary

At the request of the Pacific Ocean Division of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, International Archaeological Research Institute, Inc. (IARII) has prepared an Archaeological Monitoring Plan (AMP) for archaeological monitoring and sampling related to proposed actions for underground storage tank (UST) and pipeline removal at Bellows Air Force Station (BAFS), O'ahu to take place in the nine areas shown in Figure I. The AMP is prepared according to the requirements and specifications of (I) the Scope of Work of May 5, 1997, prepared by the Corps of Engineers (COE-SOW) and (2) the contract letter Scope of Work of May 15, 1996, prepared by IARII (IARII-SOW). The AMP is also written within the framework of The Treatment of Archaeological Properties (Advisory Council on Historic Preservation 1980) and the cultural resource management plan and general research design for BAFS. Much of the background material below is abstracted from Tuggle (1995). In the AMP the proposed UST and pipeline removal are referred to as the "undertaking" and the archaeological monitoring and related actions (including report preparation) are referred to as the "project."
