Archaeological Monitoring Plan for Archaeological Monitoring and Sampling During Removal of Two UST'S, ST-10, Sherwood Forest County Park, Waimanalo Ko'olaupoko, O'ahu Island, Hawai'i, for DERP / FUDS
Author(s): David B. Chaffee; Robert L. Spear
Year: 1999
Summary
This archaeological monitoring plan (AMP) has been prepared by SCS/CRMS in accordance with the March15, 1999 Scope of Work (SOW) provided by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Pacific Ocean Division (CEPOD). SCS/CRMS has been contacted by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to provide archaeological monitoring and sampling during removal of two USTs, ST-10, Sherwood Forest County Park (SFCP), Waimanalo, Ko'olaupoko, O'ahu Island, Hawai'i.
In accordance with the SOW, the AMP incorporates a synthesis and overview of prehistory and history of traditional Hawaiian, historic era, and military land uses. Archaeological background research shall be performed emphasizing those factors relevant to prehistoric settlement pattern and subsistence regimes at SFCP.
Archaeological monitoring and sampling will be oriented to obtain the most data available on the nature, location, age, and extent of cultural deposits. All identified cultural resources shall be fully and systematically described, documented, and sampled. All stages of the archaeological investigations shall be fully documented in a daily log.
Archaeological monitoring activities will be performed so that on-going UST activities are not, or only minimally, impacted. UST removal actions will be suspended only if it appears that an entire cultural feature is to be destroyed of if human burial remains are identified. If the archaeological monitor recognizes such imminent destruction of a potentially valuable resource, the COE Archaeology Contract Manager (ACM) will be immediately notified that UST activities should be temporarily suspended at that location. The UST activities cannot be suspended by the archaeological monitor alone.
