Summary
This archaeological monitoring plan (AMP) has been done in preparation for archaeological monitoring and sampling of cultural resources during ordinance and explosive removal action at Bellows Air Force Station (BAFS), Waimanalo, Ko'olaupoko, O'ahu Island, Hawai'i. This project, included in Delivery Order #0038, Contract DACA83-95-D-0004, consists of three 7 phases of archaeological work: monitoring during initial vegetation clearance, reconnaissance and systematic survey during pedestrian sweeps by ordinance specialists in their search for anomalies, and third, subsurface investigations of exposed cultural resources within excavated anomaly loci. Archaeological monitoring and investigations will ensure that significant remains, if present, are identified, documented, and adequately sampled.
The project's area of potential effect encompasses some 170 acres within the southeastern portion of the BAFS and extends some 2.5 kilometers (km) east-west by 1.4 km north-south (at its greatest width). The archaeological portion of this project, as stated above, involves monitoring vegetation clearance across the area, reconnaissance and survey following ordinance specialists across a pre-determined grid system, and finally, sampling of extant cultural resources encountered within subsurface contexts. Excavations for ordinance are expected to extend only one meter or less below the surface, although they may extend further if required. Archaeologists will not be present during initial subsurface testing of ordinance and/or explosive devices and will be called to the location only after the area has been declared safe by ordinance personnel.
