Summary
At the request of CH2M Hill, Scientific Consultant Services provided archaeological monitoring during the removal of five underground storage tanks (UST) at Bellows Air Force Station (BAFS). Fieldwork was conducted from 29 July to 8 August 1997.
Removal or mitigation of these tanks was performed by Environmental Sciences Pacific, Inc. as part of the Excess Land Underground Storage Tank Removal Project at Site ST-11. A sparse scatter of recent historic debris, mostly glass fragments, was found throughout this area. One artifact, a basalt hammerstone, was collected. The bulldozed path leading from the paved road to the concrete vault at the base of the knoll on the north side was also surveyed. Recent historic debris were found along this path as well, including glass fragments and broken concrete slabs. None of these materials were collected because they were identified as being less than fifty years old. There were no traditional Hawaiian artifacts, cultural materials or features found within the fill material or observed in the profile walls at any of these UST excavations.
The USTs designated ST-11G, ST-11H, ST-11I were removed. The tanks ST-11K and ST-11L will be filled with concrete and left in place.
