Preservation Plan for Site 3312 Bellows Air Force Station, O`ahu (final)

Summary

Site 50-80-15-3312 is a cemetery established at the tum of the century. It may be eligible for listing as an historic property in the National Register of Historic Places under criteria "D" on the basis of age, and special consideration as a cemetery possessing important historic associations from a community's early period of settlement, or which reflects important aspects of community history.

The purpose of the Preservation Plan is to protect and preserve the integrity of the property's location, setting and feeling as a cemetery. The Plan is designed to meet agreements reached during consultation for Section 106 the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, as amended, conducted in preparation of the Final Environmental Impact Statement and Land Use and Development Plan for Bellows Air Force Station, Waimanalo, Hawaii, December 1995. The Preservation Plan has been developed in consultation with lineal descendants of individuals buried at the cemetery and the Hawaii State Historic Preservation Officer.

The cemetery is located west of the communications facility at Bellows Air Force Station, O'ahu. A portion of the cemetery has been preserved in place by the Air Force at least since the late 1950s. Work conducted during preparation of this Preservation Plan has re-established the original boundaries of the cemetery using map and documentary information, and identified associated family names, most of which indicate Japanese ethnicity, by interpreting grave markers.
