POLLEN AND MACROFLORAL ANALYSIS FOR SITES 5IA2403, 5LA3405, AND 5LA3491, PINYON CANYON, SOUTHEAST COLORADO

Author(s): Linda Scott Cummings; Kathryn Puseman

Year: 1991

Summary

Macrofloral analyses were conducted at sites 5LA2403, 5LA2405, and 5LA3491

in Burke Arroyo near Rock Crossing in the Pinyon Canyon Maneuver Area to identify

charcoal and any evidence of economic activity. Pollen samples were examined

stratigraphically from a control column only at Site 5LA3491 to provide

paleoenvironmental data concerning vegetation near the site during its

occupation. In addition, this pollen record functions as a control for the

interpretation of pollen collected from two houses, as well as numerous features

at this site. Both pollen and macrofloral samples were examined from two houses

excavated at 5IA3491, as well as from features outside these houses. Analysis

of samples collected within the houses and from the features was directed towards

identification of subsistence activities at this site.
