the Mormon Compound. Feature 17 was a possible borrow pit located along the
northwest end of Feature 3, which was examined for pollen previously. Use of
this pit dates between 1843 and 1857 and predates use of Feature 3. Feature 16
is located near the northwest corner of the Mormon cxatpound residential area.
It underlies a turned area associated with the end of the Mormon occupation in
the fall of 1857. This feature also dates to 1843 to 1857. Both pits may relate

from this feature suggest proximity to a blacksmith shop.
