STRATIGRAPHIC POLLEN ANALYSIS AT AN ARCHAIC SITE (48SW8594), SWEETWATER COUNTY, WYOMING

Author(s): Linda Scott Cummings

Year: 1993

Summary

Site 48SW8594 was a buried site that contained evidence of two hearths.

One hearth (Feature 2) yielded a radiocarbon age of 6940 ± 80 BP, indicating

occupation during the Archaic. Both features were examined for pollen to provide

evidence of food processing activities. In addition, a stratigraphic pollen

column was sampled to provide evidence of past vegetation in the vicinity of this

site prior to occupation, as well as during and after occupation. This

stratigraphic column also serves to provide control for interpreting the pollen

record from the features.
