POLLEN ANALYSIS OF A PIECE OF GROUNDSTONE FROM CA-SNI-351, SAN NICOLAS ISLAND, CALIFORNIA

Author(s): Linda Scott Cummings

Year: 1993

Summary

A single piece of groundstone was recovered from CA-SNI-351 and examined

for its pollen and starch content. Occupation at this site occurred between 600

and 6800 BP, according to reports of calibrated radiocarbon dates (Martz,

personal communication, July 29, 1993) . The groundstone was examined to obtain

information concerning food processing activities. Since San Nicolas Island was

occupied by hunters and gatherers at the time of European contact, it is likely

they represented descendants of prehistoric populations that used tools including

this piece of groundstone.
