POLLEN ANALYSIS OF A HUMAN BURIAL IN LA PLATA COUNTY, COLORADO

Author(s): Linda Scott Cummings

Year: 1993

Summary

Two pollen samples were examined from fill inside the skull and at the

bottom of a bell-shaped burial pit at 5LP2509. The pit appears to have been

fired at some time prior to interment, suggesting the possibility of reuse of the

pit. The burial was located adjacent to an aceramic lithic scatter that may

represent occupation during either the Late Archaic (including Basketmaker II) ,

or possibly post-Anasazi periods. Pollen analysis was undertaken to examine the

burial for any evidence of placing food or vegetal ceremonial objects with the

individual at the time of interment.
