STRATIGRAPHIC POLLEN AND PHYTOLITH ANALYSIS OF SOILS FROM 32DU60S, DUNN COUNTY, NORTH DAKOTA
Author(s): Linda J. Scott; PaleoResearch Institute; Rhoda O Lewis
Year: 1983
Summary
Four soil samples were removed from a stratigraphic column taken from
the north wall of Test Unit 8 at the Tysver-Olson Site (32DU605) for pollen
and phytolith analysis (Table 1). A fifth sample was taken from the matrix
associated with carbonized bone, which produced a radiocarbon date of 5345
BP. The site is located in a shallow basin on the top of a narrow
northwest-southeast trending ridge in Dunn County, North Dakota. The
purpose of the pollen and phytolith study is to evaluate the
paleoenvironment from the stratigraphic profile sampled, with particular
emphasis on the Altithermal level. The Tysver-Olson site exhibits dated
cultural zones at 5345 BP and 4985 BP.
