Summary
Situated on the west coast of Baranof Island in the Alexander Archipelago
of the southeast panhandle of Alaska, Sitka is surrounded by the steep
Coast Range Mountains of Alaska. The city is on the north side of a large
natural bay (Sitka Sound) at an elevation of 22.68 feet. Rising to the
north of Sitka is Mount Edgecumb, a 3201 ft volcanic cone, whose most recent
recent eruptions date to the 18th Century.
