POLLEN AND PHYTOLITH ANALYSIS AT REDLEG KIPUKA, MILITARY POHAKULOA TRAINING AREA, HAWAII ISLAND, SITE 50-10-31-5003
Author(s): Linda Scott Cummings
Year: 1998
Summary
Ten pollen and ten phytolith samples were examined from site 50-10-31-5003. Pollen
samples were collected stratigraphically from layers in a lava tube to examine the prehistoric
vegetation record. Phytolith samples were collected from individual pits created by breaking the
tops of large bubbles in the lava and creating pits. It is possible that sweet potato was grown in the
pits and that they were mulched.
