POLLEN ANALYSIS FOR SITES CA-SDI-316 AND CA-SDI-4935 ALONG THE SAN DIEGUITO RIVER, NORTHERN SAN DIEGO COUNTY, CALIFORNIA

Author(s): Linda Scott Cummings; Kathryn Puseman

Year: 2000

Summary

Stratigraphic pollen analysis was undertaken at both CA-SDI-316 and CA-SDI-4935 to

identify past vegetation. In addition, pollen analysis can contribute to an evaluation of the degree

of disturbance of deposits containing cultural materials because pollen from plants introduced

during the historic era is usually very visible in the upper portion of stratigraphic columns in much

of western California. Introduced Eucalyptus and Brassicaceae pollen are expected to be important

in evaluating evidence for disturbance. Three pieces of groundstone from these sites also were

examined for both pollen evidence of plant processing and protein residue evidence of plant and/or

animal processing.
