POLLEN ANALYSIS OF POSSIBLE AGRICULTURAL FIELDS AT CHETRO KETL, CHACO, NEW MEXICO
Author(s): Linda Scott Cummings
Year: 2001
Summary
Fifteen sediments samples collected from sediments in a possible ancient field area and
canal were examined for pollen. Pollen analysis was used to determine whether or not evidence
exists for use of this area for agricultural fields in the past. Traditional pollen counts were made
of each sample, then single microscope slides were scanned to search for Zea mays (maize)
pollen, since maize is the most likely agricultural crop. Evidence for maize was recovered in eleven
of the fifteen samples submitted for analysis.
