POLLEN, MACROFLORAL, AND ORGANIC RESIDUE (FTIR) ANALYSIS OF FILL FROM A SLAB-LINED BASIN, SITE 42DA1251, UTAH

Author(s): Kathryn Puseman; Linda Scott Cummings

Year: 2008

Summary

Samples from the fill at the bottom of a slab-lined basin, site 42DA1251, were examined

for pollen, macrofloral remains, and organic residues using Fourier Transform Infrared

Spectroscopy (FTIR). This site is located just north of Flaming Gorge in northeast Utah.

Occupation dates for this feature are expected to be Archaic. Pollen and macrofloral analyses

will be used to provide subsistence information concerning plant resources utilized by the site

occupants. A control pollen sample was collected from the site surface for comparison. FTIR

analysis of the feature fill will examine the sediments for evidence of proteins, lipids, and/or

carbohydrates.
