STRATIGRAPHIC POLLEN ANALYSIS OF LATE HOLOCENE SEDIMENTS, SANTA BARBARA COUNTY, CALIFORNIA

Author(s): Linda Scott Cummings

Year: 1986

Summary

Changes in the Holocene vegetation have not been widely studied for

coastal California. Stratigraphic palynological

studies of two locations on the Unocal pipeline in Santa Barbara County,

California represent vegetational sequences for approximately 1OOO years

in the Santa Ynez Valley. This study was undertaken as part of a greater examination

of cultural resources and geomorphology along the pipeline. A

pollen study of a core from the Santa Barbara Basin off the coast near Santa

Barbara provides a record of the coastal vegetation for the past 12, 000 years (Heusser 1978) for comparison.
