POLLEN AND MACROFLORAL ANALYSIS OF FEATURE FILL, STRATIGRAPHIC POLLEN ANALYSIS, AND AMS RADIOCARBON DATES FOR SAMPLES FROM KALABERA CAVE, SAIPAN

Author(s): Linda Scott Cummings; Kathryn Puseman

Year: 2009

Summary

Samples from features and cultural strata at Kalabera Cave in northeast Saipan were

examined for pollen and macrofloral remains. AMS radiocarbon dates were obtained on

charcoal and other charred botanic remains, resulting in dates ranging from 685 ± 25 RCYBP to

3095 ± 40 RCYBP. Pollen and macrofloral analyses will be used to determine plant resources

utilized by the cave occupants and to help establish a time line for use of the cave. Pollen

samples also were collected stratigraphically through the cave deposits to provide insight into

the past environment.
