POLLEN AND PHYTOLITH ANALYSIS AT CA-ORA-678, CALIFORNIA

Author(s): Linda Scott Cummings

Year: 1989

Summary

This rockshelter is located northeast of Pelican Hill and Buck Hill

overlooking Buck Gully. Pollen samples were collected from an off-site

column to provide a control for interpreting the cultural samples. In

addition, a stratigraphic column inside the shelter was analyzed to provide

information concerning food processing activities. One mano and one mortar

were washed for pollen and phytoliths to assess food processing activities

using these tools. One coprolite was recovered during excavation and

analyzed for pollen and phytolith remains that would contribute to a better

understanding of subsistence. Unfortunately, the coprolite was probably not

human, so the data resulting from this analysis does not address human

subsistence.
