Author(s): John S. Cable

Summary

This report will discuss the results of a cultural resources visit and assessment conducted on the Poinsett Weapons Range, North Carolina. Poinsett Range is a contractor managed support facility for Shaw Air Force Base and encompasses an area of approximately 8358 acres. It is contained within the boundaries of Manchester State Park just south of the town of Wedgefield, South Carolina in Sumter County and is currently

leased from the State by the federal government. The site visit was conducted in conjunction with a larger environmental unpact study being prepared for the planned upgrade performed for the planned upgrade and expansion of the range facility. A systematic cultural resources sample survey of the project area was implemented in the fall of 1982 by Cultural Heritage Research Services, Inc. (CHRS) of Sharon Hill,

Pennsylvania (Brown et al. 1983) under contract with the United States Air Force (Shaw Air Force Base). Approximately 15 percent of the range was investigated through a quadrat sampling scheme that was stratified on the basis of a site locational predictive model. Seventeen archeological sites were identified as a consequence of the survey. The objectives of the current site visit were to (1) update the status of these sites, (2) assess the likelihood for the area of potential effect (APE) to contain cultural resources eligible for inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP), and (3) develop areas that will be directly affected by the planned development. John Cable of NSA served as Principal Investigator for the project, which was implemented in the field on November 18th and 19th, 1992.
