Intensive Cultural Resources Survey of the 10-Acre Shoofly Mine Tract

Author(s): Johshua N. Fletcher

Year: 2007

Summary

"...The survey involved a review of historic maps and plats of the region, a review of the listings of identified archaeological sites at the South Carolina Institute of Archaeology and Anthropology (SCIAA) and historic properties (sites, buildings, structures, objects, districts, or landscapes listed on or eligible for the National Register of Historic Places [NRHP]) at the South Carolina Department of Archives and History (SCDAH), and systematic examination of the proposed 10-acre mining area. We identified no previously identified archaeological sites or historic properties in the project tract. Historic maps reveal no information about this portion of Dorchester County. There are no standing structures on the tract. We identified one archaeological site (38DR337) during the field investigations. Site 38DR337 is a small, Early to Middle Woodland ceramic scatter located in the southeast portion of the tract (see Figure 1). We recommend site 38DR337 not eligible for the NRHP. No further management consideration of this archaeological site is warranted. The Shoofly Mine Tract warrants no further consideration with respect to cultural resources. A detailed description of the methods employed and the results of the survey follow."

Notes

General Note: "Brockington and Associates, Inc., conducted an intensive cultural resources survey of the Shoofly Mine Tract in Dorchester County, South Carolina. Investigators identified one site (38DR337) during the cultural resources survey. This site lacks the potential to contribute meaningful information concerning the Pre-Contact occupation of the project tract or region beyond that recovered to date. We recommend site 38DR337 not eligible for the NRHP. No further management consideration of this archaeological site is warranted. The Shoofly Mine Tract warrants no further consideration with respect to cultural resources."
