Cultural Resources Survey of the Sandhill Road Mine Tract

Year: 2007

Summary

"Archaeologists with Brockington and Associates, Inc., conducted an intensive cultural resources survey of the Sandhill Road Mine Tract in Dorchester County, South Carolina, on October 1–8, 2007, as requested by Austin Construction Company, Inc. ... There are no standing structures on the tract. We identified four archaeological sites (38DR350–38DR353) and eight isolated finds (Isolates 1–8) during the field investigations. Site 38DR350 is a small, nondiagnostic Pre-Contact ceramic and lithic scatter located in the northeast portion of the tract. Site 38DR351 is a small scatter consisting of one nondiagnostic Pre-Contact ceramic artifact and several nineteenth- to twentieth century Post-Contact artifacts located in the northwest portion of the tract. Site 38DR352 is a small scatter of nondiagnostic Pre-Contact ceramic and lithic artifacts located in the central portion of the tract. Site 38DR353 is a Ceramic Late Archaic ceramic and lithic scatter located in the central portion of the tract. Isolates 1–8 are scattered across the tract (see Figure 1). We recommend sites 38DR350–38DR353 and Isolates 1–8 not eligible for the NRHP. ..."

Notes

General Note: "Brockington and Associates, Inc., conducted an intensive cultural resources survey of the Sandhill Road Mine Tract in Dorchester County, South Carolina. There are no standing structures on the tract. Investigators identified four archaeological sites (38DR350–38DR353) and eight isolated finds (Isolates 1–8) during the survey. These resources lack the potential to contribute meaningful information concerning the Pre- and Post-Contact occupation of the project tract or region beyond that recovered to date. We recommend sites 38DR350– 38DR353 and Isolates 1–8 not eligible for the NRHP. No further management consideration of these resources is warranted. The Sandhill Road Mine Tract warrants no further consideration with respect to cultural resources."
