Archaeological Survey, Proposed Temporary Breacher Facility Fort A.P. Hill, Caroline County, Virginia

Summary

The Fort A.P. Hill Cultural Resource Manager, under the Environmental Division of the Directorate of Public Works within Fort A.P. Hill, Virginia, has completed an archaeological survey in association with the proposed construction of a temporary breacher facility at Fort A.P. Hill, Caroline County, Virginia. The proposed undertaking will include road improvements and the construction of three concrete pads (one 50x100-foot slab for breach training facility, one 40x100-foot slab for a storage & preparation building, and one 20x52-foot slab for a classroom building), with future plans to construct three facades with associated berms in the southeast portion of the open field and to provide connections to power and telephone lines. The construction will be located within open fields along an existing road. The Area of Potential Effect for the archaeological survey includes the open fields where the construction will occur, as well as surrounding areas that may be impacted by construction or training activities. The archaeological survey included an area of approximately 6.2 hectares (15.3 acres).

The objective of the archaeological survey was to identify any historic properties that may be located within the APE and evaluate the potential eligibility of any such resources for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places. The archaeological survey included pedestrian surface survey and the excavation of shovel tests. No archaeological sites, artifacts, cultural features, or cultural deposits were encountered during the archaeological survey.
