Summary

This report presents the results of reconnaissance survey for PIN 6066.58.101, as well as background research on the environment, prehistory, and history of the City of Elmira and the Towns of Ashland, Elmira, and Chemung in Chemung county. Both a walkover of the project area and systematic shovel test pit sampling were performed. Twelve hundred and fourteen test pits were excavated within the project area. Prehistoric material was recovered from 49 STPs, 37 of which were associated with eight prehistoric sites (one site, the Moss Site, is primarily identified as an historic site). The remaining 12 STPs produced isolated prehistoric material, consisting of single chert lithics. Additional testing around these finds failed to produce additional artifacts. No site designations were assigned to these spots. All of these isolated finds were recovered on the terraces adjacent to Baldwin Creek and the tributary of Baldwin Creek and between 30 to 150 m from designated sites. Because of the lack of cultural material in the additional tests, as well as the distance from a designated site, the isolated finds were not considered part of any of the sites. However, the isolated material does suggests that the terraces were being widely used, with concentrations of activity occurring at the sites that were found (the Saunders Site, the Berry Field Site and the Red Jacket Site). Historic material was recovered from 403 STPs, with 226 STPs producing refuse that was not associated with a 19th or early 20th century structure or MDS; no site designations were given to these areas. historic material was recovered from 177 STPs associated with four standing structures and 10 map documented structures.
