Summary
This report describes the results of an architectural survey performed in April 1998, by the Cultural Resource Survey Program (CRSP) of the New York State Education Department (SED), for New York State Department of Transportation PIN 1089.57.101 - US 4: Fort Edward to Hudson Falls. The goals of the survey were to identify and evaluate all architectural properties within the project area, and to make recommendations of potentially eligible properties to the State Historic Preservation Office. The architectural survey consisted of a review of the State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) Field Services Bureau Site File to identify National Register-listed and National Register-eligible properties within the project area, and a field survey to update data for these properties and to evaluate all other architectural properties for potential National Register eligibility. A total of 340 building properties, consisting of 97 in the Village of Fort Edward, 62 in the Town of Fort Edward, and 181 in the Village of Hudson Falls, border US 4 within project limits. The following properties listed on the National Register of Historic Places are located within project limits. Four individual properties consist of St. James Episcopal Church, the U.S. Post Office, and the Wing-Northrup House in the Village of Fort Edward; and the U.S. Post Office in Hudson Falls. The Hudson Falls Historic District extends along US 4 (Main Street) between Mechanic Street and Martindale Avenue in Hudson Falls. The Glens Falls Feeder Canal passes beneath Main Street south of Feeder Street in Hudson Falls.
