Finding Aid, Archaeological Field Reconnaissance Brookville Reservoir Waterfowl Marsh 1980

Summary

This collection is referred to as “Archaeological Field Reconnaissance Brookville Reservoir Waterfowl Marsh 1980.” This name is consistent throughout the finding aid, the file folders, and the box labels. The extent of this collection is one (1) linear inch.

The collection was originally housed in an acidic folder labeled with “Franklin County, 80FR35, Brookville Reservoir, Waterfowl, DNR,” which was stored inside of a plastic bag labeled with additional information regarding the sites involved, including 12U137, 12U138, 12FR164, and 12FR165. Correspondence, handwritten notes, a site survey form for site 12U138, field catalogue records, photocopies of field photographs for Ellys Creek, copies of maps for the project areas, and copies of the final report were included in the collection. No photographic materials were present.

All metal contaminates were removed. Several correspondence documents in the Administrative Records were recorded on onion skin paper. These documents were mended with archival mending tissue around the edges to prevent any further tearing. The handwritten notes were adhered with archival mending tissue to acid-free paper due to their small size and placed in their assigned record series folder.

The Archaeological Field Reconnaissance Brookville Reservoir Waterfowl Marsh 1980 project commenced in November 1980 by Thomas C. Beard and was completed with assistance from L.D. Armstrong (Beard 1980). The records suggest that preliminary background work was initiated in 1978 with a records search through Indiana University, as well as a survey proposal request for the waterfowl marsh project in Union County. Copies of field photos of the Ellys Creek area were also included in the collection and placed in the Background Records series based on their date of September 1978. This background work extends the inclusive years of work for this project from 1978 to 1980.

The project focused on sites 12FR164, 12FR165, 12U137, and 12U138. As recorded in the final report, sites 12FR164 and 12FR165 were considered surface sites with chert debris and fire-cracked rock, and the small river terrace campsites represent single, short-term occupations, which have been compromised by cultivation and shoreline erosion. Sites 12U137 and 12U138 included a bull-dozed farmstead and barn and did not yield a significant amount of artifacts (Beard 1980). The background records include copies of the map T. 11N. T. 10 N. with Ellys Creek outlined, and multiple site numbers were labeled on the map, including “F21, U118?, U-3?, U109, U117, U111?, U115?, U108, U131, FR15, FR17” for Fayette, Union, and Franklin County areas. A duplicate map was also included with the site numbers 12U137 and 12U138 labeled in addition to the other site numbers. The significance of these sites in question is unknown.

Also of note are the repository notes which were recorded from 1997 on the field catalogue records for sites 12FR164, 12FR165, and 12U137. A field catalogue record for 12FR165 also has a note regarding catalogue number nine, a stemmed point, which reads, “Ashtabula-like and pulled for general point collection.” The note was initialed in May 2003 and May 2007. This projectile point is not present within the artifact collection. Indiana State Historic Architecture and Archaeological Research Database (SHAARD) printouts dated February 21, 2011 for sites 12FR164 and 12U137 are also present in the collection, and were placed within the Background Records series.
