Artifact Report, Clifty Creek 1969
Summary
U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), Louisville District archaeological collections were sent to the Veterans Curation Project’s (VCP) St. Louis laboratory in the fall of 2009. The VCP St. Louis laboratory was established by USACE, St. Louis District’s Mandatory Center of Expertise for the Curation and Management of Archaeological Collections using American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 funds and staffed through Brockington and Associates, Inc.
Human skeletal remains (HSR) were removed from the USACE, Louisville District collection by USACE, St. Louis District physical anthropologist Cathy Van Arsdale after the discovery of their presence by the VCP lab staff. Because of the sensitive nature of human remains, it was determined that they would be sent to the USACE, St. Louis District archaeological laboratory to be processed and labeled by Corps employees.
The procedures employed by the St. Louis VCP to re-house the archaeological material from the Clifty Creek, 1969 investigation are discussed in the report. In the re-housing process of each investigative effort of the USACE, Louisville District collection, the same standard procedures and Glenn A. Black Laboratory of Archaeology (GBL) guidelines followed. Upon completion of this curation management project, these collections were sent to GBL for permanent curation.
