Chronology of Significant Events for Lackland Air Force Base, 1941-1994

Author(s): Edgar P. Sneed

Year: 1992

Summary

Lackland Air Force Base's lease on life in the post-Cold War world appeared to be secure at the end of 1991. It seems appropriate, then, to celebrate the installation's major contributions to the United States's pursuit of national security over the past half-century. This chronicle of events shaping Lackland's experience, appearance, and spirit represents a step in a process that will eventually result in a commercially published, professional history of this military installation.

Chronologies are, at best, crude instruments for studying the history of an institution. They lack continuity, narration, analysis, and perspective. What a good chronology does provide is extensive and accurate detail of events. This chronology is offered in that spirit. In the sheer volume of facts presented here, there will be some error and omission, for which the author offers regret.

This document is the enlarged, revised and reprinted version published in 1995. It was originally published in 1992 and then revised and reprinted in 1994.
