Archaeological Monitoring of Water Main Replacement Excavations at Bellows Air Force Station, Waimanalo, O'ahu Island, Hawai'i

Summary

At the request of Thurston Pacific, Inc., Garcia and Associates conducted geophysical survey and archaeological monitoring for water main replacement excavations at Bellows Air Force Station (BAFS), Waimanalo, O'ahu Island, Hawai'i. Archaeological monitoring was required to determine the presence or absence of cultural resources within the project area and to assess the significance and integrity of any identified resources.

GPR survey located an unavoidable anomaly which turned out to be a buried bovine humerus. Based on the GPR and PM findings, the route for the water main was altered to avoid disturbing other anomalies. No indication of butchering was noted on the bovine humerus. This bone is most likely related to the historical Waimanalo Ranch activities. No other cultural deposits were encountered during the project. No portions of the project area are eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places.
