A Cultural Resources Survey of the Proposed Expansion of the Coronado Coal Haul Railroad Corridor on State of Arizona Lands, Apache County, Arizona
Author(s): Kenneth Boden
Year: 1991
Summary
An archaeological survey was conducted for Salt River Project (SRP) for a proposed extension of the Coronado Railroad right-of-way (ROW). The extended ROW occurs in two areas on private and State of Arizona lands in Apache County, Arizona. The survey was completed by SWCA, Inc. Environmental Consultants, under contract with SRP. The project was administered by Dr. Judy L. Brunson, SRP Archaeologist, and David H. Greenwald, SWCA Project Manager. The survey was completed by the author on January 18, 1991. The survey tracts, totaling approximately 13 acres, paralleled the existing Coronado Railroad line (c.f. Figures 1 and 2).
The northern parcel parallels both sides of the existing railroad ROW on State of Arizona land and arcs with the curve of the railroad as it ascends out of the Puerco River Basin from the north and onto Puerco Ridge. The transects were 100 feet in width and approximately 1/4 mile in length. The parcel can be located on the 1972 Navajo South, Arizona, 7.5’ USGS topographic map in Township 19 North, Range 26 East, Section 24, NE 1/4 and is illustrated in figure 1 of this report.
The southern parcel parallels the railroad ROW on its west side. This tract is 100 feet in width and 1/2 mile in length and can be located on the 1974 Ninemile Seep, Arizona, 7.5' USGS topographic map (photorevised 1984) in Township 18 North, Range 26 East extending from the NE 1/4 of the SE 1/4 of the SE 1/4 of Section 12 south to the SE 1/4 of the NE 1/4 of the NE 1/4 of Section 13. The survey parcel on Section 12 is on State of Arizona Land, while the survey parcel concerned with Section 13 is on private land. The parcel is illustrated in Figure 2 of this report.
