Holocene Landscapes of Waimanalo Bay: Archaeological Testing in the Anti-Tank Trap Training Area, Marine Corps Training Area Bellows, O'ahu, Hawai'i

Year: 2003
Summary
Subsurface archaeological testing was conducted at Bellows Air Force Station (BAFS), Waimanalo, O'ahu, in order to evaluate the potential for significant cultural resources that might be impacted by activities at the proposed Anti-Tank Trap Training Area at the Marine Corps Training Area Bellows (MCTAB). This archaeological subsurface testing project is responsive to the Historic Preservation Services-Statement of Work (HPS-SOW) NO.03C, Task Order 0020, of March 21, 2003, as amended April 7, 2003, and May 5, 2003. The SOW provided for the excavation of backhoe trenches in order to assess the potential for intact subsurface archaeological deposits in the vicinity of archaeological Site 50-80-15-4850 in the southern area of the MCT AB.
This project was conducted consistent with the guidelines presented in The Treatment of Archaeological Properties (Advisory Council on Historic Preservation 1980) and the Cultural Resource Management Plan (CRMP) for BAFS (Farrell and Spear 2003). No intact subsurface archaeological deposits were found during testing excavation in the training area proposed for the undertaking. However, data recovered from the testing project contribute to modeling of Holocene landscapes in the Waimanalo embayment. The model of stream channel history presented in this study for the Waimanalo Bay has many significant implications, and also illustrates the utility of careful documentation of , 'non-cultural"" stratigraphy encountered during archaeological projects.
