Summary
Salt River Project (SRP) contracted with SWCA, Inc., Environmental Consultants, to conduct archaeological data recovery at the Overkill Site, AZ M:7:48(ASM), as part of the Mead to Phoenix 500 kV Transmission Line project. The Overkill Site is located on federal land administered by the U.S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Land Management (BLM). The site is located approximately 15 miles south of Wikieup in Mohave County, Arizona. AZ M:7:48(ASM) is situated on a ridge between Burro Creek and Kaiser Spring Canyon, approximately 0.66 mile west of Highway 93 (Figure 1.1). The site was previously determined to be eligible for inclusion to the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) by the Western Area Power Administration (WAPA) with agreement by the State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO). The Advisory Council on Historic Preservation, WAPA, and the Arizona and Nevada SHPOs signed a Programmatic Agreement that detailed the stipulations for construction of the transmission line in concurrence with SRP, the BLM, and the National Park Service (NPS). SWCA’s investigations were conducted under BLM Cultural Resource Use Permit No. AZ-000111. All material will be curated at the Arizona State Museum (ASM) in Tucson.
