Summary

In July 1994, the United States Department of the Interior, Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Louis District, entered into Interagency Agreement No. 1422P852-A4-0015 for the purpose of identifying and locating collections from BLM-administered lands made under the provisions of the Antiquities Act of 1906 (P.L. 59-206) and the Archaeological Resources Protection Act (P.L. 96-95). This task was undertaken to assist BLM in compliance with provisions of the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA; P.L. 101-601, 36 CFR Part 79 (Curation of Federally-Owned and Administered Archeological Collections), and Department Manual 411 (Policies and Standards for Managing Museum Collections).

During Stage One, St. Louis District personnel contacted curation facilities in the eastern United States to identify and locate collections affected by NAGPRA. During Stage Two, NAGPRA inventories were conducted at the American Museum of Natural History (AMNH; New York, New York) and the Haffenreffer Museum of Anthropology (Bristol, Rhode Island). Stage One findings include the locations of the collections, researchers producing the collection, a summary of the collection history, and the individuals contacted at each facility. Stage Two findings include the NAGPRA inventories of skeletal remains and the associated and unassociated funerary objects at the AMNH and the Haffenreffer Museum.
