Summary

In June 1998, St. Louis District personnel visited the Connecticut Army National Guard (CTARNG) Headquarters in Hartford and the Office of Connecticut State Archaeology in Storrs to review and document archaeological and historic buildings survey work conducted on National Guard facilities in the state. This document reports the history of cultural investigations on federally owned or federally supported CTARNG facilities, lists archaeological sites and historic standing structures recorded within facility boundaries, discusses historic contexts and predictive models, and provides a list of Native American tribes that may be culturally affiliated to archaeological collections recovered from CTARNG facilities. To date, 72 historic properties, including historic standing structures and prehistoric archaeological sites, have been recorded on Camp Rowland/Niantic Training Site and Stone’s Ranch. No cultural properties have been recorded on Bradley Field, Camp Hartell, or East Haven Rifle Range. No archaeological sites or individual historic buildings have been recorded at State Arsenal and Armory, but the entire facility is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The extent, nature, and location of archaeological collections recovered from work conducted on CTARNG facilities will be determined in the second phase of this project, to be completed during Fiscal Year 1999.
