US Army National Guard Cultural Resources Planning Level Survey - Hawaii

Summary

In May 1998, St. Louis District personnel visited the Hawai’i Army National Guard (HIARNG) Headquarters, the Hawai’i Department of Land and Natural resources, and the Bishop Museum in Honolulu to research archaeological and historic buildings survey work conducted on federally owned or federally supported Army National Guard facilities in the state. This document reports the history of cultural investigations on HIARNG facilities, lists archaeological sites and historic buildings recorded within facility boundaries, discusses historic contexts and predictive models, and provides a list of Native Hawaiian organizations that may be culturally affiliated with archaeological collections recovered from HIARNG facilities. To date, 54 archaeological sites have been recorded on Kanaio Training Area. Thirteen historic properties, including archaeological sites and historic buildings, have been recorded within the Keaukaha Military Reservation. Neither Kekaha Small Arms Range nor the Ukumehame Firing Range has recorded cultural properties. No cultural properties located on HIARNG facilities have been listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The extent, nature, and location of archaeological collections recovered from work conducted on HIARNG facilities will be determined in the second phase of this project, to be completed during Fiscal Year 1999.
